“Tomas, you should write a book about it,” said one of the participants in a coaching training we had just finished. The “it” he referred to was how my introversion inhibited and helped my career. I laughed it off. Yet, a week later, as I sat on the small terrace at my home, I started to think. It was a lovely summer afternoon. The sun was slowly setting, there was a light breeze, and the birds were singing. Life felt good. I started to think about the book suggestion. It wasn’t the first time someone had made it, and I felt they had a point. I love my life. I consider myself to be very successful, more than I ever imagined. I love everything that I do. I look at life with optimism and hope. I love being who I am. I’m an introvert, and I’m proud of it.
That was in late 2011. It’s been ten years. Since then, I spent many sleepless nights and weekends reading and researching anything related to introversion and success I could get my hands on. I would read abound fifty books a year, with a spike to a hundred during the Covid-19 pandemic. I spent years writing The Geeky Leader blog and published more than 200 articles.
I have started writing this book in 2013. In fact, I have started writing a completely different book. Over the years, as my thoughts on the topic expanded and solidified, I realized that you need to start with the basics. My original plan was to focus on leadership and how introverts can succeed in management roles. (Those books are still coming.)
As I was collecting materials, writing my blog, and talking to people, I realized that there is a much bigger need to talk about how a successful career for introverts looks like in the first place. That is when I shifted my focus and decided to write first a guide for introverts on how to have a successful career before I follow up with books about leadership.
Half the population of this planet is introverted. Many of them have a considerable impact, are immensely successful, lead global companies, and impact the lives of millions of people. Yet, when we look for our heroes, we often don’t see those introverts, and if we see them, we don’t realize that they are introverts. It is the nature of introverts to stay out of the spotlight, but that doesn’t mean we don’t matter.
If you are an introvert, this book will give you the tools and the motivation to work on your success. You will also discover your strengths and use them to build a successful career while practicing discipline and becoming methodical.
Start with understanding who you are. Consider your strengths, your core values, what you care about, and your passions. Look at the Successful Career Wheel framework, which summarizes the critical aspects any successful career needs to have. Think about your goals and find out your definition of a successful career.
Then move on to the Quiet Success Sweet Spot concept and analyze what options are available to you. What are the activities you love? What are you good at? What do others need that they are willing to pay for? What people do you enjoy working with? Use the Sweet Spot concept to determine what work will lead to your life satisfaction and a fulfilling career.
Once you understand what you want, move forward and plot a path to get there. Depending on what you need, focus on training and practicing, marketing and networking, reframing your view of the world, and coaching to build the proper habits and attitudes. If you conclude that you need to change jobs, read through the parts about interviewing and negotiating to use your introversion to your advantage during the recruitment process.
Consider adopting the Quiet Success Principles as a way of living. The principles, habits, and attitudes described in this book will make it easier for you to not only get to your Sweet Spot but to stay there.
Use the introvert’s strengths and live a life of Quiet Success.
